There are many instances when the best way to be green is to reuse. Purani Jeans is a movie about a factory in India that recycles discarded jeans, turning them into denim for their jeans. This movie was produced by two Danish filmmakers who traveled to India and found a manufacturing company that specializes in recycling old clothing into new fabric. To show how this process works, they took some of the discarded jeans from their own closets and created new pants from them with fun colors and patterns. They collaborated with the recycling company to show how they can make new jeans from old jeans. The film shows how old jeans are cleaned in an organic detergent to remove dirt and oils, then run through a machine that turns them into yarn. The fabric is then spun using traditional methods in order to create sturdy threads for stitching. Finally, the fabric is dyed and mixed with other fabrics in order to create the patterns that are used for the final product. What results is a pair of jeans with 70% recycled material, but only slightly worn at the seams where the original fabric was torn away. The movie shows the Danish team's journey to the manufacturer, then to India where they are able to see how jeans are made before being delivered back to their home country. Then they return home and do an interview with the recycling company before filming a second version of the jeans at another factory. The second version is shown in a formal outfit - this time it's a shiny white jacket with brown pants. This clip also shows how jeans are made under strict sanitary conditions so that people can work without getting sick. The movie ends with an interview about sustainability, poverty, and human rights, which is followed by a final piece of footage showing how people are educated about recycling their clothing through this company. The movie is shot in a documentary style and it is meant to educate viewers about sustainable and ethical clothing by showing how the process works. The movie uses an upbeat tone to make it more entertaining, rather than lecture viewers. Purani Jeans was produced by Bauml Productions, a Danish team consisting of Mads Baumloe, Mads Kjaergaard Madsen, and Philip Udsen.
